The concert at Alternativa in Zlín tonight was well attended. The spacious gallery had high ceilings and glass on three sides of the room, and chairs were organized in a semi-circle around the stage. It was a reverberant space, and the band had to adjust and play more quietly than usual. The setting also gave me a new palate to create different tone colors with my voice and experiment with my musical phrasing. Alternativa also has a lovely baby grand piano. Hearing Tomas play the songs in our sets that feature piano (instead of keyboard) was a wonderful change.
The band played a beautiful show. I shared my joy with the audience between songs by telling stories from the last two weeks. I felt deep appreciation in the applause and smiles we received from the mix of musicians and music lovers in the audience and I sold almost as many CDs as Ema did at Kladno Jazz Club! Thinking about my CD being played in this special place gives me the lovely feeling that I am leaving a piece of myself behind
Tonight I am sitting in my hotel admiring the colorful bouquet of flowers I received after the concert. I can hardly believe this tour is nearing its end. The town of Zlin is quiet, and the gentle patter of rain outside my open window is an appropriate backdrop for the little tugs of heartache I am starting to have about leaving this beautiful country.
